Last Monday the 30th of June, Dr. Vandana Shiva , a well known Indian environmental activist and an author on anti-globalization spoke here in Colombo.

The theme of her well attended speech was “Right for Seed and Water; a campaign for an alternative development model”.

Listen to her full speech here:

It has been “20 years since the signing of the GATT agreement which led to the formation of WTO.. What did that promise of globalization bring us?” questions Vandana Shiva through her speech.

She goes on to add “what it brought us is collapse at every level”, she says. “ The word ‘free trade’ in fact is freedom for those who want to exploit the earth and the society”, adds Dr. Shiva.

Through her speech she talks about how globalization poses threats to the ‘right of seed and water’, and urges the need for a new development model.

The event was organized by the Movement for Land and Agricultural Reform (MONLAR) and Center for Environment and Nature Studies.
