CEPA Cafe on Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises: Backbone of the Economy?
The Government of Sri Lanka is actively pursuing the growth of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), projecting them as the ‘backbone of Sri Lanka’s economy’. The efforts are targeted to help create an entrepreneur – based economy in Sri Lanka, along with using entrepreneurship as a tool for rehabilitation. In line with this, the Centre for Poverty Analysis (CEPA), in collaboration with the Secure Livelihoods Research Consortium (SLRC), conducted a ten-month long research towards understanding policies and implementation practices at a national and district levels with regard to SMEs. The research findings highlight the gaps in policy and practice in the Batticaloa and Trincomalee Districts by examining the reasons that propel people to choose this form of livelihood activity.
Space for Interaction hosts debates on topical and current issues related to poverty, development and social change, held at CEPA premises in an informal setting. The Café series focuses mainly on non-mainstream subjects, targeted towards non academic, non development and the youth. There are 4-6 Café series per year.
